Flurazepam 10mg is a long-acting benzodiazepine used to treat chronic or severe insomnia. At this dose, it helps patients both fall asleep and remain asleep throughout the night.
The long half-life allows for sustained action but can cause daytime drowsiness or a “hangover” effect, especially with repeated use.
Flurazepam works by potentiating GABAergic neurotransmission, reducing sleep latency and frequent nocturnal awakenings. It should be reserved for short-term use due to rapid tolerance, dependence, and risk of withdrawal (including rebound insomnia and anxiety). Elderly patients are at higher risk for confusion, falls, and daytime impairment.
• Primary uses: Severe/chronic insomnia.
• Onset: Within an hour.
• Warnings: Limit to short-term/intermittent use; avoid in elderly.
• Risks: Daytime sedation, dependence, withdrawal, falls, tolerance.
