Phenergan 25mg contains promethazine hydrochloride, a first-generation antihistamine with strong sedative, antiemetic, and anticholinergic properties. It is used to treat allergies, nausea and vomiting, motion sickness, and insomnia. It may also be used as a preoperative sedative.
Promethazine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the brain and body, reducing allergic responses and inducing drowsiness. It also acts on the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) to suppress nausea.
• Primary uses: Allergic reactions, nausea, motion sickness, insomnia
• Onset: ~20 minutes (oral); Duration: 4–6 hours (may last longer in some patients)
• Warnings: Avoid alcohol and CNS depressants
• Risks: Drowsiness, dry mouth, confusion (especially in elderly), dizziness, respiratory depression in children
